 SBU initiates criminal proceedings into attempt on Prosecutor General’s life

The Security Service of Ukraine has brought criminal charges over the attempt on the life of a public official due to the attack committed on the office of Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin last night.

SBU Spokesperson Olena Hitlianska said, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

"The criminal proceeding under the Article 112 of the Criminal Code has been initiated," she said Tuesday morning.

According to the Article 112 of the Criminal Code, the attempt on the life of a public official is punished by 10 to 15 years of imprisonment or life sentence.

The office of the Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin was fired at Nov. 2 at about 10 p.m. According to Hitlianska, the head of the agency was carrying out a meeting with his subordinates at that moment.

The spokesperson has not revealed additional details. She only added that the operational investigations group of the Security Service of Ukraine had been alarmed and immediately left for the scene.

"There were no casualties as a result of the attack. Neither the Prosecutor General nor anyone else was hurt," the SBU spokesperson said.

It was noted that the shots were fired from the street.
