 Poroshenko claims high level of voting culture in local elections

The Ukrainians have demonstrated a high level of voting culture in the local elections held on Oct. 25.

President Petro Poroshenko said it during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny.

"I would like to congratulate all voters in Ukraine. In general, despite the extremely difficult conditions and challenges, the state managed to ensure a high level of voting culture in defiance of the fact these were the first polls under the new electoral system," he said.

He also stressed that most Ukrainians have supported democratic political forces, which means local councils may be constituted of the pro-Ukrainian majority.

The president noted he sees the will of citizens in the local elections as a step towards the reforms, decentralization, increasing of powers and responsibilities of local councils.

As previously reported, the turnout in the local elections, held on Oct. 25, made 46.61%.
