Judges falling within purview of law on lustration must fulfill requirements of legislation, - Poroshenko

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko emphasizes the need to reinvent the country’s judicial branch.

Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

"Responding to your question on purge and attitude to the court, my position is absolutely clear: those who committed crimes during the previous government must bear responsibility. Those falling within purview of law on lustration must fulfill legal requirements. The reinvention of the judicial branch is another issue and I strongly emphasize that the country requires urgent and efficient judicial branch reinvention," the president said answering journalists' questions concerning the Constitutional Court judges, who are subject to lustration.

He reminded that the draft amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine on judicial reform had already been developed.

Poroshenko said that the draft will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada after the conclusions of the Venice Commission and the national discussion. "The reinvention of the judicial branch must be part of the judicial reform," he said.
