 Kyiv enveloped with smother again: 122 hectares of peatlands smoldering near Ukraine’s capital, – State Emergency Service

The city of Kyiv is filled with acrid smell of smoke. The State Emergency Service explained that 24 peatlands with the total area of 122 hectares are burning around the capital.

Censor.NET reports citing the State Emergency Service of Ukraine press office.

"There are 24 localized glowing spots in the peatlands with the total area of 122 hectares being extinguished in 11 districts of the Kyiv region as of 7 a.m. Oct. 19.

"322 firefighters and 82 pieces of equipment of the State Emergency Service are involved in extinguishing of the smoldering peat. Products of combustion can be smelled in some areas of Kyiv," the agency informed.

The level of radiation background in Kyiv and the Kyiv region is within the limits averaging 12-14 micro roentgen per hour (the safe radiation background level is up to 30 mcR/h). The radiation background in the exclusion zone averages 23 micro roentgen per hour (he safe radiation background level is up to 50 mcR/h).
