"It is unconditional recognition of Ukraine," - Poroshenko on election of Ukraine to UN SC. VIDEO (in Ukrainian)

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko considers Ukraine's election as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2016-2017 biennium a great success.

Censor.NET reports referring to presidential press service.

According to Poroshenko, this result has been reached due to the deep international solidarity with Ukraine in the face of the ongoing external aggression. Each of the 177 votes in favor of Ukraine signifies support of its state sovereignty, political independence, and unity, he said.

"Ukraine's UN SC membership empowers Ukraine with new capabilities in defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity," Poroshenko stated.

He also stressed that Ukraine, as one of the founding members of the organisation, would take maximum efforts to ensure the implementation of goals and values of the UN Charter, including peaceful settlement of conflicts and respect for the principles of justice and international law.

The president emphasized that Ukraine would also seek to reform the SC so as to resist the abuse of the right of veto by its permanent members, one of which - the Russian Federation - has become an aggressor against Ukraine.
