Merkel named key condition for possible lifting of sanctions against Russia

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that a possible lifting of sanctions against Russia is still tied to Russian authorities' commitment to observation of the Minsk agreements.

As reported by Censor.NET citing Interfax-Ukraine, this is announced by the Internet portal of German's news magazine Focus on Thursday.

At the same time, the chancellor showed cautious optimism about resolving the situation in the Donbas.

"I am only talking about a vague hope, no more and no less," Merkel said, speaking in the Bundestag.

According to the chancellor, a political solution of the conflict in the east of Ukraine may become possible due to the recent withdrawal of heavy weapons and the cease-fire extensively observed since September this year.
