 Poroshenko awarded Hero of Ukraine title to medic Ihor Zinych (posthumously), tanker Vasyl Bozhko, and fighter Yevhen Mezhevikin

President Petro Poroshenko awarded Hero of Ukraine title along with the Order of "Gold Star" to three heroes of anti-terrorist operation - Junior Sgt. Ihor Zinych (posthumously), Senior Lt. Vasyl Bozhko and Maj. Yevhen Mezhevikin.

The decree of the president notes that Ihor Zinych is awarded for "exceptional courage, heroism, and fortitude demonstrated while protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, for his sacrificial serving to the Ukrainian people," Censor.NET reports citing presidential press service.

Hero-medic at the Donetsk Airport, 26-year-old ambulance attendant Ihor Zinych died on Jan. 20, 2015 in explosion at the airport's new terminal. He arrived at the Donetsk Airport on Dec. 17, 2014 as part of the 3rd battalion of the 80th Separate Airmobile Brigade and until the last moment stayed by the soldiers, rescuing the wounded under heavy fire. According to the airport fighters, only during Jan. 16-19, Ihor managed to save 50 to 70 soldiers. He performed resuscitation procedures in the field, was wounded but did not leave the battlefield, continued to save lives. After the second blast in the new terminal, Ihor received fatal injuries. Only on Feb. 17, after lengthy negotiations, the body of Ihor Zinych was given to his parents for burial, with loads of evidence about his courage and heroism being further related by his fellow soldiers. He was awarded the national decoration - the Order of "National Hero of Ukraine."

Tanker of the 92nd Mechanized Brigade, Senior Lt. Vasyl Bozhko has been awarded for the personal bravery and heroism shown while protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, for his sacrificial serving to the Ukrainian people. Feb. 12, near the village of Lohvynove, helping the fighters of the 79th Airmobile Brigade, his tank engaged into an unequal battle and due to professionalism and resourcefulness of the crew destroyed three enemy tanks and a large number of militants.

The Star of Hero has also been awarded to a tanker, commander of the 1st tank battalion of the 1st Armored Brigade, Maj. Yevhen Mezhevikin. The crews under his command performed combat missions in the area of Pisky, Avdiivka, Zenyt stronghold, guarded the area near the Donetsk airport. June 4, 2015, Yevhen Mezhevikin was awarded National Hero of Ukraine title along with the first non-state award - the Order of "National Hero of Ukraine."
