"I ask for an urgent decision to be taken on establishing a territorial body of National Police - the Cyber Police Department," Avakov said in Kyiv on Tuesday at a Cabinet meeting.
He stressed: "We are setting up cyber police which will assume new functions... We are adding a number of features and services that did not exist before."
Avakov announced that a competition to fill the vacancies at the department will be launched on Oct. 15.
Avakov also asked the government to urgently decide on the establishment of a number of other regional bodies in accordance with the law on National Police.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Arsenii Yatseniuk expressed confidence that the candidates for positions at the Cyber Police Department will be qualified. "Given the fact that Ukrainian IT specialists are among the world's best, I think our cyber police will be manned with real professionals," he said.
He also stressed the necessity to address the issue of salaries of cyber police officers.
As also reported, the Interior Ministry earlier announced that since the beginning of the year, cybercriminals had stolen more than UAH 500 mln (about $22.9 mln) from the bank cards of Ukrainians.
