U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter says Russia may incur losses in Syria in coming days.

He said this to journalists during a press conference, Censor.NET reports citing UNIAN. Russia could face heavy losses in Syria in the near future, Carter said after a meeting of the NATO Council at the level of defense ministers. According to him, the United States will continue consultations with Russia on safety of flights in Syria.

Carter characterized Russia's undeclared cruise missiles strikes on targets in Syria as unprofessional actions. According to him, a Russian missile flew just a few miles away from a U.S. drone.

Russia continues to stand by current Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Syrian government forces have carried out ground operations supported by Russia's war planes. The U.S. Department of State reported that less than 10 percent of the Russian air strikes targeted ISIS positions, with rebels opposing the Assad regime being hit more often.
