Military Prosecutor’s Office initiated 16,000 cases against military absentees while Interior Ministry found only a thousand of them

The military prosecutor's office has opened 16,000 criminal proceedings against army defectors but the police was able to find less than a thousand of them.

Main Military Prosecutor of Ukraine Anatolii Matios said in an interview to 112 Ukraine TV channel, Censor.NET reports citing Gordon.

"We have investigated 16,000 criminal proceedings against soldiers absent in desertion, who had left the ATO area. The significant part of them had deserted with weapons. They were put on the wanted list. The Ministry of Internal Affairs have found not more than a thousand of them over the year," Matios said. "Where did they go? They did not fly away but returned home. So, the district police officer with his salary of 2,000 hryvnia (about $90) did not fulfill his responsibilities, thus the entire system did not work."

According to the Main Military Prosecutor, the absence of inevitability of punishment in the country corrupts the law enforcement agencies.
