 Withdrawal of foreign troops from Donbas must be carried out immediately, without reference to elections, Poroshenko says

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the withdrawal of foreign troops from the Ukrainian territory should take place immediately, without reference to the scheduled local elections.

He stated at press availability, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

"We stress that the withdrawal of foreign troops should take place immediately, without any reference to the elections, which is clearly written in the Minsk agreements, clearly confirmed by the leaders of France and Germany and brought to the Russian Federation's attention," Poroshenko said.

He also added that holding of illegal, illegitimate elections of the local authorities in the occupied territories scheduled for Oct. 18 and Nov. 1 constituted menace. According to Poroshenko, these illegal elections posed threat to the Minsk agreements. "Therefore, the main goal was to prevent illegal fake elections that have been announced."

"The second goal was to provide the truce, to enter the beginning of this event," the president said noting that complete cease-fire had established in the Donbas, without artillery strikes and even small arms attacks. Poroshenko said he had proposed a very clear plan at the talks in Paris, which involved removal of light weapons, tanks, artillery of caliber under 100-mm as well as granting OSCE SMM full access to the occupied territories of the Donbas.

"If any provision of the Minsk agreement is not fulfilled, the consequences will be faced: the sanctions, their toughening and extension," he said.
