An attempt to "sacralize" the participation of the army of the Russian Federation in the Syrian conflict has been made by Director of the Russian Center for the Study of the Middle East and Central Asia Semen Bagdasarov on air of the Russian Rossia TV channel.
According to him, the territory of Syria was the place where Christianity came to Russia from. Being outraged by the destruction of Orthodox holy sites in Syria, Bagdasarov called the country the Russian land.
"Many people think that Syria is a faraway country. The Sufi mosques have been destroyed there, the greatest Christian shrines have been desecrated. And who our residents consist of? They are Orthodox Christians, Muslims, Sufis. This is our land. It was the country where civilization came to us from. The first monks and priests in Russia were Syrians. This is our land, our sainted place..."
