 Police conducts operation against amber miners in Volyn forests: nearly thousand law enforcers involved, 17 people arrested. PHOTOS

The Volyn region police received information that a group of 300 people was actively carrying out illegal extraction of raw amber in the forest area.

The Volyn Regional State Administration held a coordination meeting with participation of the governor, representatives of the security agencies, and civil society activists to stop and prevent further illegal extraction of amber, Censor.NET reports citing the press service of the Interior Ministry.

About one thousand officers of the police, Security Service, State Emergency Service, National Guard, Volyn Regional Directorate of Forestry and Hunting sector, representatives of NGOs are involved in protection of public order. In addition, the police special designation units arrived from neighboring regions to help their colleagues.

One APC and farm equipment have been brought to shut off the roads.

The law enforcement officers have detained four vehicles and 17 people as of 8 a.m. They have also seized extracted amber, cash, and equipment for extraction of Sunstone.

About 200 people and 20 vehicles trying to get into the forest have gathered at the scene.

The information has been registered in the Unified Register of pre-trial investigations under Part 2 of the Article 240 (Violation of rules of protection and use of mineral resources) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
