"No elections (local elections on Oct. 25 - ed.) can be held in the occupied territories," Poroshenko said in an interview with Ukrainian TV channels on Sunday.

The president noted that a key position is not the fact of elections alone, as Russia wants it, but the way in which they are held.

The head of state stressed that elections must be free and fair and can be carried out only if there is compliance with the required standards. "If we are not capable to provide presence of Ukrainian media and parties, people's safety, protection of will of expression, then the Parliament will announce elections in such areas as soon as an possible," Poroshenko said.
