Poroshenko highlighted prominent personal role of José Manuel Barroso in ensuring the unity and solidarity of the European Union with Ukraine and creating a pro-Ukrainian international coalition. The president stressed that it helped save our country in the face of Russian aggression. "We are fighting not only for our independence, we are fighting for freedom and democracy as the basic European values," he said.
Petro Poroshenko and José Manuel Barroso warmly recalled the events of June 2014, when the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU was signed in Brussels.
José Manuel Barroso stated: "Europe wants to help Ukraine." He commended Poroshenko's achievements as the president, noting the difficulty of challenges and threats faced by Ukraine. "The level of confidence towards Ukraine in the European structures is very important," he said.
"Consider me a friend of Ukraine," José Manuel Barroso noted and promised to further assist Ukraine on its European track.
José Manuel Barroso arrived in Kyiv to participate in the 12th Yalta European Strategy Annual Meeting.

The Order of Freedom was established by the presidential decree of May 20, 2008 to honor individuals for outstanding and special achievements in strengthening of Ukraine's sovereignty and independence, consolidation of Ukrainian society, development of democracy, socio-economic and political reforms, championing constitutional rights and freedoms of the man and citizen. The Order of Freedom may be awarded to citizens of Ukraine, foreigners and stateless persons.
