 About 1.7 million children affected by conflict in Donbas, - UNICEF

About 1.7 million children are directly or indirectly affected by the conflict in Donbas.

UNICEF representative in Ukraine Giovanna Barberis stated at a briefing in Kramatorsk today, Sept. 9, Censor.NET informs citing OstroV.

She noted that the level of psychological trauma and stress that children have experienced is immense.

Giovanna Barberis said it was difficult to provide any precise data. However, UNICEF estimated that about 186,000 displaced children and additionally the children remaining in the territory uncontrolled by Ukraine have suffered from various kinds of psychological and social violence. According to UNICEF estimates, about 1.7 million children have been affected by the conflict in various ways that is they have been directly or indirectly affected.

According to Giovanna Barberis, UNICEF has been investing efforts to create a network of psychologists from the very beginning. Those psychologists have undergone special training to ensure sufficient skills for the work in the area. Over two thousand psychologists have been trained as part of this program. These psychologists have already started their work. This assistance is provided within both the education system and through local initiative centers. The psychologists have provided assistance of psychological and sociological nature to more than 36,000 children.

The UNICEF representative also added that such activities would continue existing on the ongoing basis while there would be a need for them.
