Speaking at a merger congress of president's BPP (Petro Poroshenko's Bloc - ed.) - Solidarity and Klitschko's Udar, Poroshenko called Aug. 31 a very responsible day, when Verkhovna Rada's extraordinary session will vote for draft amendments to Constitution in terms of decentralization, Censor.NET reports citing the official website of the head of state.
The president stresses that the constitutional reform is important, as Ukraine's development is impossible without it, with any opposing being beneficial only for the enemy. "Ukraine is weak without reforms. Ukraine has no chance without reforms. Without reforms, we only preserve Ukraine's weakness, failing to modernize the authorities," Poroshenko said.
The head of sate emphasizes that "decentralization brings the government closer to people, increases responsibility of both authorities and people and transfers a bigger part of powers to territorial communities. For 24 years there have been only words and no actions. Government officials tried to keep powers for themselves and obstructed their transfer to people," Petro Poroshenko said.
The president stresses that 78 percent of Ukrainians support the decentralization reform. "We must do our best to have this reform supported by the Parliament," he said.
The president notes that the forces interested in undermining the country's stability are trying to artificially force in discussion on some items of Transitional Provisions and the status of certain territories. Poroshenko says that 99 percent of Ukrainians support the integrity of the country. "There will be no federalization and no statuses. The Parliament will be voting for this on Monday. Thus, we will unveil lies and defend Ukraine's unitarity. We are responsible for protecting our people from lies. We will implement the constitutional reform, take an active stand, go to people and explain everything to them. We must defend Ukraine. If we fail, there will be no one else to defend it legally. And the feat of our warriors in the east will be vain," the president stated.
The head of state notes that the decentralization reform is not the last one, for it will be followed by the judiciary reform aimed to eliminate corruption in courts.
"We will keep implementing reforms, despite all criticism. We were not wrong to elect the new Parliament and form the coalition. We must ensure that political forces fulfill obligations they undertook before people," the president said.
Poroshenko also says that Europe, despite its own problems, sees Ukraine's interests as a top priority and declares support of Ukraine in implementing its constitutional reform.
