 Police investigate attack on car of First Deputy Minister of Education Sovsun as hooliganism

The police have initiated criminal proceedings into the assault on the car of First Deputy Minister of Education and Science Inna Sovsun committed near the building of the Ministry of Education in Kyiv, Aug. 25.

Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Main Directorate in Kyiv Oleksandr Tereshchuk said on air of 112 Ukraine TV channel, Censor.NET reports.

"They opened criminal proceedings into hooliganism," he said.

Tereshchuk also noted that the law enforcement officers have found the weapon. They are currently establishing legitimacy of its possession.

"The ruffian armed with a gun fired shots into the air and has hit the car. The police have immediately arrived and arrested him. The gun has been found. Its legitimacy is currently being checked. The documents show that he was granted permission for the purchase of arms. There are empty shells, there is another weapon. We are also checking its legitimacy. The illegal grenades have as well been found. We will interrogate him during the investigation to find out what he needed them for," he said.

Sovsun, whose car has been fired at near the building of Education Ministry, will be provided with additional protection. This was stated by Deputy Minister of Education Oleh Derevianko.

"We, especially the deputy minister, were offered an additional protection. It will be provided at least until the law enforcers establish all the circumstances and make findings," Derevianko said.

He noted that no threats were received by the minister, deputy ministers or other officials of the agency.

"The only thing we can say is that even if it was an attempt to intimidate, nobody has been daunted in our ministry," Derevianko said.
