 Military Prosecutor's Office extends investigation of Ilovaisk tragedy, - Military Prosecutor Matios

Military Prosecutor's Office has extended investigation into numerous deaths of Ukrainian military encircled by militants and Russian servicemen near Ilovaisk of the Donetsk region in August and September 2014.

This was announced by the Deputy Prosecutor General - Chief Military Prosecutor Anatolii Matios at a meeting with military experts, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny.

"Society may be indignant, but we still have a few months to come up with this decision (completion of the investigation). We need a few more months to assess the general theater of hostilities," he said.

Matios notes the investigation will examine legitimacy of actions by the armed forces leadership, particularly the Chief of Staff Viktor Muzhenko.

At the same time, Matios is sure the main cause of the tragedy was a treacherous invasion of Russian troops in the rear of ATO forces.

Also, the side reasons were outdated military regulations and inconsistency of a size of the Interior Ministry battalions with staff number of servicemen.

According to Matios, some soldiers refused to obey orders, in particular 45 people from the Interior Ministry battalions sharply refused to take part in the Ilovaisk operation.

The chief military prosecutor says the investigation will assemble all the episodes of Russia's military aggression in the Donbas into one criminal proceeding.

As reported, Matios declares 366 killed, 429 wounded and 158 missing in action during the Ilovaisk tragedy.
