Russian public activist Gaidar accused of extremism and separatism

Reaction of the Russian government to Maria Gaidar's obtaining of Ukrainian citizenship wasn't long in coming.

The senator from the Bryansk region Mikhail Marchenko asked the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation to check the words of the former vice-governor of the Kirov region and present adviser to the Governor of the Odessa region of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili for separatism and extremism, Censor.NET reports citing Novyi Rehion.

According to the senator, Gaidar, "working off Ukrainian citizenship," has talked enough for a criminal case in Russia and should be deprived of Russian citizenship: "Today we learnt of Maria Gaidar becoming a citizen of Ukraine. This happened after she, having been appointed adviser to the Governor of Odessa Mikheil Saakashvili, made a number of bold statements that Crimea had been annexed by Russia with her and Ukraine's common enemy being "an authoritarian regime killing people both in Russia and Ukraine."

According to him, he has already submitted an application to the Investigative Committee asking to check Gaidar's statements for separatism and extremism. Marchenko also calls on Gaidar to quit Russian citizenship, as she swore allegiance to another state.
