Russia should be judged for genocide, – Crimean Tatar Congress. APPEAL

татары конгресс крымские анкара

Crimean Tatar Congress participants urged the world community to recognize activities of the Russian State in Crimea between 1783, when the Crimean Khanate, the historical homeland of Crimean Tatars, was destroyed, and present as a genocide.

The Congress participants addressed the world community, the UN, and all nations of the world who respect human rights, rule of law, and democracy, Censor.NET reports citing Ru.krymr.com.

After the occupation of Crimea by Russia in 1783, the Russian state began to exert systematic pressure on representatives of the Crimean Tatar community forcing its members to leave the peninsula and replacing them by Russian population, the appeal reads.

"As a result, more than 1.5 million of Crimean Tatars were forced to leave their homeland over the 19th and the 20th centuries," the document reads.

During the Soviet rule most Tatar intellectuals were killed, while the rest of the Crimean Tatars were deported from their homeland on May 18, 1944. Almost half of them died.

In the following years the USSR used all opportunities to avoid the return of Crimean Tatars to Crimea.

"Today the Russian Federation, successor of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, annexed the peninsula ignoring all norms of international law and human rights. Since then and until now, the Russian Federation implements systematic policy for ignoring fundamental freedoms of the Crimean Tatars, forced emigration of the Tatars from Crimea, rapid assimilation, pressure, murder, imprisonment, and deportation of those trying to resist," the Congress participants stated.

Therefore, the World Congress of Crimean Tatars seeks for "assistance in carrying out the investigation and trial over the Russian Empire and its successors, the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation, for all the crimes committed since 1783 and to date and aimed to destroy the Crimean Tatar nation." The Congress also calls for "recognition of these atrocities as genocide."
