 24 amber diggers detained at illegal mine in Zhytomyr region. PHOTOS

July 29, near Korosten in the Zhytomyr region, an interdepartmental raid group of law enforcers tracked and detained 24 people, who had just launched illegal mining of amber in the area. A pre-trial investigation is initiated.

This is reported by the press service of the Internal Affairs Minisrty Zhytomyr region department, Censor.NET reports.

On the outskirts of the Hulianka village near Korosten law enforcers recorded a suspicious gathering of people and cars. After approaching, they saw ready-to-use equipment commonly used by amber diggers to wash out soil: motorpumps and water hoses.

An investigative group was called to documnet the revealed malintent. The diggers and equipment were taken to a city police department for further procedural actions.

"In total 24 people have been detained at the age of 17 to 48 years. They are residents of the Zhytomyr, Rivne, Chernihiv and Kyiv regions. Five cars, motorpumps, water hoses and other equipment have been seized. We are seeking to arrest the seized property," the head of the Korosten PD Ihor Zhmyda says.

A criminal proceeding over an attempt to violate the rules of protection and use of mineral resources (Article 15, Part 2 of Article 240 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) has been commenced. Clarification of all circumstances is underway.
