 Poroshenko about NATO: Ukraine is interested in expanding joint maneuvers

Ukraine is interested in further development of cooperation with NATO in the defense sector, including expansion of the joint exercises program aimed at strengthening the Ukrainian army.

As reported by Censor.NET citing the head of state press service, this was announced by President Poroshenko at a meeting with the U.S. European Command, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Philippe Breedlove.

Poroshenko expressed gratitude for support and assistance from the United States and NATO as regards strengthening Ukrainian defense potential. "This is a very important issue for us during the annexation of Crimea and the Donbas aggression," he said.

"The president noted the effectiveness of joint military exercises, in particular of those on the Yavoriv training ground. He expressed Ukraine's interest in developing further cooperation in the defense sector, including expansion of the program of joint exercises intended to strengthen the Ukrainian army, level its preparation standards with the best up-to-date practices," the statement reads.

"We've got an effective military and technical cooperation. There are also good prospects for cooperation in terms of military exercises," the president said.

Breedlove, in his turn, praised the level of cooperation between Ukrainian and American military.

He said that according to his information everything indicated at the exercises demonstrating good progress with military training and performing at a high level.

Breedlove also noted the importance of further implementation of reforms in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, despite the military operations in the east of the country.

The U.S. general notes it's difficult to reform when there is a war and assured the Ukrainian side of the U.S. support in present and future.

As reported earlier, Breedlove intends to visit the Yavoriv training ground in the Lviv region hosting joint Ukrainian-American exercises on Thursday, July 23.
