 Verkhovna Rada supports state funding of political parties in first reading

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported in the first reading the bill No.2123a on amendments to certain legislative acts of Ukraine on prevention and counteraction to political corruption. The decision was voted for by 245 MPs at the required minimum of 226 deputies.

The Verkhovna Rada intends to introduce state funding of political parties in 2017. The draft amendments to some legislative acts on prevention and counteraction to political corruption No.2123a were supported in the first reading by 245 MPs.

The bill provides for introducing direct state funding of the parties' statutory activity not related to their participation in the elections. Also it provides for partial reimbursement of election campaign expenses.

As explained by the Minister of Justice Pavlo Petrenko, this bill is on the list of documents required for Ukraine to obtain the visa-free regime. The First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andrii Parubii, before putting the the bill for a vote, emphasized that its implementation would allow political parties to gain independence from oligarchs.
