Verkhovna Rada passes local elections law

Verkhovna Rada passed a new law on local elections, which is now to be signed by the president.

This is announced by a Censor.NET correspondent in the parliament.

The decision was supported by 257 deputies.

As reported by the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andrii Parubii, 1,547 amendments to the bill had been prepared by the second reading.

Before voting, the MPs supported the ad hoc procedure for the bill to be considered in the second reading without amendments, taking into account only the amendments of the relevant committee.

The norm of the bill, providing for participation in the elections of only those parties registered 365 days before the elections, was not supported by the deputies during the debate.

"We are not against the participation of all parties registered by the moment of the law's publication," the chairman of the Poroshenko Bloc faction Yurii Lutsenko stated in his speech from the rostrum.

Also, the law provides for a gender quota among the participants. According to Lutsenko, there should be 30% of women nominated as parliamentary candidates.

Iryna Herashchenko explained the law provided for participation of at least 30% of representatives of one sex.
