Turchynov commented on demilitarization of Shyrokyne: "We are not going to leave strategic positions"

The demilitarization of Shyrokyne does not mean that Ukraine loses control over this village - the commanding points will remain under the control of the Ukrainian army.

This was announced by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine news agency, Censor.NET informs.

Turchynov noted that "it was crucial to move the front line as far as possible from Mariupol" when he coordinated the operation to capture Shyrokyne. Thus, according to him, the militants' defenses were breached, the front line was significantly moved away and the security of the city was ensured.

The NSDC Secretary stressed that the demilitarization does not mean that the troops withdraw abandoning certain locations. "On the contrary, we force the militants to withdraw according to the Minsk Agreements."

"We are not going to leave strategic positions which we have paid by the blood of our heroes for. Shyrokyne is completely under our control after the withdrawal of the militants," he stressed.

Turchynov said that the demilitarization procedure provides for the establishment of the permanent OSCE observation point in this location while Ukrainian police will maintain control after the withdrawal of militants, as well as the creation of conditions for the return of local residents. "In this case, all the commanding points critical to stop any attack remain under the control of our military," he stressed.

"This is the path that allows us to peacefully regain control over the temporarily occupied territory. This is actually the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, according to which there should be any Russian soldier left in Ukraine and the control of the Ukrainian government must be restored throughout the entire territory," the National Security and Defense Council Secretary concluded.
