"When one uses a machine gun or a grenade launcher against the enemy at the front - he is a hero but when a person starts shooting from the same weapon in the rear causing casualties - he is a thug and a murderer. And there is no other option. The bandits and assassins must stand trial," Turchynov said commenting on the events in Mukacheve.

He noted that the State is obliged to protect its citizens. "However, the SBU, Interior Ministry and PGO are obliged not only to detain those who have attacked people, but also deal harshly with those who cover smuggling, hire criminals and armed militants for showdowns in the region hiding behind senior positions and deputy's mandates," Turchynov said.

He has also expressed his support for serious personnel changes in the region both in law enforcement agencies and administrative authority. "We must finally vote in the parliament for stripping of deputies and judges of immunity. We need to finally start purging the country of criminals and corrupt officials," the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council concluded.
