"The construction of defensive positions took much longer than planned, but it has come to its final stage," the NSDC Secretary stated, adding that most of the strong points have already been built and accepted by the Armed Forces. "The construction of other defense positions will be completed in the near future," he said.
According to Oleksandr Turchynov, the task of the defensive lines built along the line of contact is to "stop any enemy attack, including one with the participation of the regular units of the Russian armed forces and to create preconditions for a powerful response." "Engineering and mine barrage infrastructure that is being built around the strong points, as well as location of firing positions shall prevent breakthroughs of our defense at the junction of defensive positions and become a reliable barrier against intrusion attempts of reconnaissance and sabotage and terrorist groups from the occupied territory," he said.
The NSDC Secretary paid particular attention to the quality of the fortifications. "Iron-concrete fortifications have to protect our military even from a direct hit by shells and mines," he said, drawing attention of the General Staff and Defense Ministry leaders to the need of a thorough acceptance of defensive lines, to ensure "that there are no design flaws and defectsб which could negatively affect protection of the troops."
After the meeting the leaders inspected the quality of work at several strong points located at the first line of defense and carrying a large fire load during attacks, which are frequently conducted by Russian-terrorist groups despite the Minsk agreements.
