 US condemns intention of separatists to hold "local elections" in Donbas, - Biden

Washington condemns the separatist leaders' initiative to hold "local elections" on the occupied territories of Donbas on Oct. 18.

As reported by Censor.NET citing Ukrinform, this was announced in a statement of the White House, published after conversation between U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden and Prime Minister of Ukraine Arsenii Yatseniuk.

"The U.S. Vice President has condemned the statement of separatist leaders on intention to hold elections on Oct. 18 that will contradict the Minsk agreements and Ukraine's legislation," the document says.

The parties discussed the situation in the east of Ukraine and "expressed deep regret over the civilian deaths as a result of the ongoing shelling of the city of Shyrokyne." The parties also welcomed the EU decision to extend sanctions against Russia till Jan. 31, 2016.

In addition, Biden supported continuation of the process of constitutional reforms in Ukraine, which, according to him, "will become a tool of significant decentralization of power (in Ukraine - ed.) in accordance with the Minsk agreements."
