President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera about terms of Ukraine's accession to NATO and what will affect Kyiv's final decision.

This is reported by Censor.NET citing Novoe Vremia.

According to the head of state, NATO accession might be discussed not earlier than in six to seven years from now.

"The time has not come yet. In order to join the Alliance, we need to meet certain standards. We are working on reforms inside the country, in the economy, in social and administrative sectors. This will be a long process - at least six to seven years. When we are ready, we will announce referendum and ask the people of Ukraine whether we should join NATO or not," Poroshenko said.

The president also stressed that there is no more efficient security system in the world than NATO.

Earlier, Poroshenko issued a decree outlining major steps on Ukraine-NATO cooperation for 2015.

On Dec. 29, 2014, Poroshenko signed a law confirming Ukraine's non-aligned status.
