The first issue addresses by the newly appointed governor concerns Danube ferry crossing in Reni to Romania, initiated by one of local entrepreneurs. The crossing could increase the number of tourists to Vylkove and the region by 5-7 times, Saakashvili said.
"As soon as they started to construct the crossing, Prosecution Office sends a request for permits in order to initiate a criminal proceeding. … Excuse me, but this is racketeering - as soon as an investor comes in, the state offers him not friendship, not help, but a letter from prosecution," Saakashvili said.
The governor stressed that he would not tolerate prosecutors who threaten and racketeer businesses and investors in the Odesa region.
"I do not know the businessman who constructs this ferry crossing," Saakashvili continues. "But I know the people who really need it. And the first offer from the Ukrainian state is not a loan, or help with roads, or customs assistance, but a threat to initiate a proceeding. This is not how business is done. This is how racketeering is done," Saakashvili stressed.
One of prosecutors said that there are "state interests" in question, to which Saakashvili responded: "State interest is not an interest of Prosecution Office or of Regional Administration. State interest is an interest of a business, of an investor. State interests are to create jobs, to pay salaries, to support the people."
Saakashvili stressed that "we are at war with corruption. … And don't you count on your patrons in Kyiv, I don't care about them. My patron is Ukrainian people, whom I promised to make life better."
The governor announced check-up of Prosecution Office and other state authorities in the region.
