As reported by Censor.NET, this was announced by deputy head of Olevsk district of the Zhytomyr region Yurii Khalymonchuk. Part of his video interview was published online by blogger Denys Kazanskyi. The official said that police and local authorities have little powers to prevent the illegal activity.
"The camps are completely fenced, there are military tents there and military equipment," Khalymonchuk said in his interview. "The equipment includes military trucks that had been stolen from the Ukrainian army in previous years.... There are only about 35 police officers in the whole district, we can do nothing to those people."
The only way to deal with illegal amber getter is to deploy special forces, Khalymonchuk said.
It was also reported by Kazanskyi that the illegal amber is being sold right at the spot, near Olevsk of the Zhytomyr region. The price for one kilogram varies from $400 to $5,400 depending on fraction (the bigger, the more expensive).
