Ukraine to reinforce its border with Transnistria, Saakashvili says

Head of the Odesa Regional State Administration Mikheil Saakashvili said he intends to engage in the strengthening of the border with the breakaway republic of Transnistria.

He stated at a press conference when asked about the concerns of self-proclaimed authorities of this region on his appointment as governor of the Odesa region, Censor.NET reports citing the official website of Odesa city.

"We are not going to be a separate country here, but the strong region of strong Ukraine," Saakashvili said.

At the same time, Saakashvili says that the separatists like those from the Transnistria or Bessarabia are just ordinary criminals who are kept on a short leash by the Kremlin. "I learned that there has been an underworld convention organized by the Georgian criminal lords and one of them from Abkhazia heads the "Bessarabian People's Republic". They all represent Moscow and such people are chasing me," Saakashvili said.

"Ukraine is going to restore the law and order on the contact line in the near future. The smuggling of drugs and weapons passing through the border mean trouble. There is a program of the President aimed at providing more funds to strengthen the border. This will take place after we reduce corruption in all bodies. After all, the barbed wire can be stretched there but it will make any sense if a local customs officer or border guard lifts this wire and lets the contraband in. That is, there are two points - the strengthening of the border and control of corruption," Saakashvili said.
