Ironically, one of the rationales that Putin provided for his incursions into Ukraine was to protect Russian speakers there. Russian speakers in Ukraine are precisely the ones who are bearing the brunt of the fighting.

U.S. President Barack Obama said at a press conference after the G7 summit in Germany, Censor.NET reports with reference to the White House press office.

"And, ironically, one of the rationales that Mr. Putin provided for his incursions into Ukraine was to protect Russian speakers there. Well, Russian speakers inside of Ukraine are precisely the ones who are bearing the brunt of the fighting." he said.

"Their economy has collapsed (on the occupied territories - Ed.). Their lives are disordered. Many of them are displaced. Their homes may have been destroyed. They're suffering. And the best way for them to stop suffering is if the Minsk agreement is fully implemented," Obama pointed out.

In aftermath of the summit, the G7 countries declared that they would tighten the sanctions on Russia should the situation in Ukraine get worse.
