 PGO investigates participation of Russian General Staff officials in terrorist activities in Donbas

The Prosecutor General’s Office initiated an investigation into the involvement of officials of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation in fighting on the side of the terrorists in the Donbas.

This was stated by Head of the criminal proceedings supervision department of the PGO Yurii Sevruk at a briefing on Tuesday, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

"Currently [we] initiated an investigation into involvement of Russian servicemen detained near Shchastia in terrorist activities. During the investigation we received data on possible involvement of officers of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation in terrorist activities. At this time, [we] started investigation regarding this fact," he said.

On May 16, GRU servicemen Aleksandrov and Yerofeyev were detained by Ukrainian soldiers near Shchastia. On May 20 they were notified of suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities as part of the "LPR".

On May 22 Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv arrested Sergeant Alexander Aleksandrov and Captain Yevgeniy Yerofeyev for two months.

In a conversation with the OSCE SMM observers the Russian commandos admitted that they had previously went on missions to Eastern Ukraine under the instructions of the military leadership of the Russian Federation.

Earlier, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said that they expected the release of the detained Russian citizens in Ukraine, noting that Yerofeyev and Aleksandrov were "former" Russian military. Putin's spokesman Peskov also demanded the release of the Russian soldiers.
