Eight journalists killed in Ukraine in 2014 - Independent Media Union

During 2014, eight journalists were killed in Ukraine, both local and foreign. Several media employees were killed this year, most of them in the Donbas area.

This is stated on the official website of the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine, Censor.NET reports.

"Over the year of this confrontation [between Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists - ed.], more than 40 media representatives went through captivity. Several journalists are still being held prisoners. Thus, virtually all local journalists, supporters of democratic freedoms, were forced to leave the occupied territories because of the threat to life and health. Many media outlets have ceased the existence due to pressure on editorial teams, embezzlement or property damage, or economic inability to evacuate the media to Ukrainian territory," the statement said.

In June 2014, Reporters Without Borders reported deaths of five media workers since the beginning of 2014.
