 Fire mounts near Chernobyl nuclear power plant - Avakov

Interior Minister Arsen Avakov says that the situation with the fire in the exclusion zone has escalated.

This was stated by the minister on his Facebook page, Censor.NET reports.

He noted: "At 6:30 p.m. the situation with forest fire around Chernobyl escalated. The flames once again attack the forest in the direction of Chernobyl facilities. Mounted fire and sudden gusts of wind have created a serious threat to the spread of fire in the 20km zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. There are about 400 hectares of forest in the fire zone.

"The prime minister urgently called a Commission for Emergencies. The National Guard and Interior Ministry units have been raised on alert.

"Yatseniuk and officers of the Emergency Service are working at the scene, in the vicinity of the line of fire attack. I'm at the operational headquarters in Kyiv - the airport - coordinating departures of special aircraft.

"We are working. We understand the responsibility and will not allow the underestimation of risks!" the minister concluded.
