 Ukraine should be ready to apply for EU membership in five years - Poroshenko

Ukraine must ensure effective implementation of the Association Agreement and achieve the requirements necessary to apply for EU membership.

This was stated by the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko at a plenary meeting of the Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv on Monday, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

Poroshenko is convinced that Ukraine shall fulfill the conditions for applying for membership in the European Union in five years.

"We are ambitious in our plans and faith, and that is why we declare that in five years we shall ensure effective implementation of the Association Agreement and achieve the conditions necessary to apply for membership in the EU," Poroshenko said.

According to him, Ukraine's membership in the EU is a key goal.

"Strategic guidelines of our commitment to transformation is the prospect of membership in the European Union. This is a key objective for which we are conducting reforms. This is a key goal of our Strategy 2020 program, and the convincing support of this course by citizens has been confirmed by public opinion polls," he said.

The president stressed that the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU is an integral part of the reform program and "the basis of the coalition agreement, upon which the Ukrainian government wad formed."

The Association Agreement with the EU does not provide for membership.
