Putin on Crimea annexation: "Russia will go to the very end defending its interests"

"I think we did the right things and I don't regret anything," he said. According to him, it was the most important for him to understand what the people living in Crimea wanted.

"I told my counterparts about it at the time. I told them that people were the most crucial factor for us," Putin said. "I said, I don't know what interests you're going to defend but we'll go to the very end defending our own interests."

He said his state "could not abandon people who wanted to return to Russia and were afraid of the power of neo-Nazis, far-right wing radicals or the Banderites." "That's a matter of paramount importance. Not because we want to grab or eat up something and not even because of Crimea's strategic significance for the Black Sea area," he said. "Simply, this is an element of historic fairness," he concluded.
