A powerful 7.9-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Saturday, killing hundreds, destroying homes and ancient temples, and triggering at least one avalanche on Mount Everest.

The quake hit just before noon local time, with an epicenter about 50 miles from the capital of Kathmandu and 50 miles east of Nepal's second-largest city, Pokhara. Local authorities warn death toll is likely to rise following the worst tremor in the Himalayan nation in more than 80 years.
