He said this during a joint press conference with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, Censor.NET reports citing Evropeiska Pravda. "The attitude to the idea of peacekeepers' deployment had been lukewarm previously, but now everyone realizes that the issue of peacekeepers is the most effective way to de-escalate the conflict. I emphasize that not freezing but de-escalation is meant," he said.
Poroshenko stressed that the only mechanism considered at the moment is the one that envisages the UN Security Council decision on the beginning of the peacekeeping operation. To do this, the Council must obtain the consent of Russia, which has been vetoing all Ukrainian proposals.
"There are two stages. Stage one is preparation of the UN Security Council decision. The second stage is preparation (prior to the mission) and the participation of peacekeepers in the operation. If the first step may take several weeks, the second one would take months," the president said.
Poroshenko stressed that the possibility of introducing peacekeeping force in the Donbas will be discussed with the Russian Federation in Normandy format with the participation of France and Germany. "Minister Klimkin is in Paris at the moment preparing a meeting in Normandy format where the main topic should be the peacekeepers issue," Poroshenko said.
