"This (the bottom - ed.) is where 70% of the total staff of the prosecutor's office is. The Ukrainians most often deal with prosecutors of the local level. We will also be combing the higher level at the same time. The process will begin in April and end in September. 181 people have already been dismissed from the prosecutor's office under the law on purging. The General Inspection Service will commence work soon - an order on its creation will be signed in the next few days. We begin comparing incomes of employees with their property, study their businesses, influence, authority of prosecutors in each area. We will work very aggressively," Sakvarelidze said.
He did not elaborate on how the composition of the Prosecutor's Office will be renewed after cleansing.
"It's hard to say. There are plenty of qualified people in the Prosecutor's Office who work hard. How effectively their daily work is organized and which priorities are chosen is another matter. You just have to give them an opportunity to fulfill themselves. After the first stage, we need to leave 15,000 employees in the Prosecutor's Office. Right now there are 18,500. It would be perfect to reduce the staff to 10,000 by the end of the year, and at the same lower the load and remove the excess from the prosecutor's work. The prosecutors should not have 200-300 cases. It is better to deal with 30 promising cases than 300 unpromising ones," he said.
Sakvarelidze also forecasts increase on the employees' salaries.
"The salary will increase due to savings resulting from the dismissal of the staff. When we prove to the public that the Prosecutor's Office is changing and purging, we will have the moral right to demand more money from the budget. Each prosecutor and investigator shall have a high salary," he added .
