 Vice-rector of Kyiv Medical Academy attacked in capital’s downtown – Interior Ministry (updated)

In Kyiv, an unknown person attacked first vice-rector of the Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education using firearm. The victim is in hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Censor.NET reports citing the Ministry of internal Affairs Main Directorate in Kyiv.

According to the report, the police are conducting search activities to trace the person who attempted assassination. The motives and reasons for committing the crime are specified.

"The information about shooting on Bahhovutivska Street was received by the call center of the Shevchenko district department of Kyiv police yesterday at 10.40 p.m. The district police department officers established at the scene that a citizen, born in 1959, has received a gunshot wound to the back. The victim was taken to medical treatment facility, where he is operated. The victim holds senior position in one of the higher educational institutions of Kyiv," the statement reads. The city police have specified neither the name of the victim, nor the one of the higher educational establishment to which he was related. However, Magnolia TV reported later that it was Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education First Vice-Rector, Yurii Vdovichenko.

According to the law enforcement agency, it was preliminary found that a man arrived to his house at 10.30 p.m. He received injuries when he entered into the elevator. According to the victim, an unidentified person walked through the front door of the entrance hall. He also denied any conflicts, strained relations at work or in other environments.

The law enforcers reported to Magnolia TV that the unidentified person was most probably shooting from a hunting rifle. The vice-rector was taken to the hospital with blunt penetrating gunshot wound of left scapula.

Shevchenko district police investigative department opened criminal proceedings under part 2 of the Article 115 and part 1 of the Article 15 of the Criminal Code (murderous assault).

The law enforcers are conducting investigative actions to establish the identity of the person who has committed a criminal offense and clarifying the reasons and motives for the crime.
