Russian diplomat Sapogov, who coordinated military intelligence, expelled from Ukraine

The advisor to the Embassy of Russia in Ukraine Oleg Sapogov, who appeared to be the deputy head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) residency, was expelled from Ukraine on March 20.

Censor.NET reports citing a source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Sapogov coordinated provocative actions of the so-called All-Ukrainian Brotherhood Battalion, which attempted to seize the Presidential Administration building in early February. The diplomat was personally present near the Administration on Feb. 3 from 7.00 to 8.30 p.m., coordinating the activities of the organizers and participants of the provocation on the instructions of the General Staff of the Russian Federation.

It was also established that Sapogov, who came to Ukraine in February 2015, is related to the personnel of the GRU of the General Staff. Particularly, he was the deputy chief of the GRU residency. Working under cover as an advisor to the Russian Embassy, he actually coordinated intelligence activities of the Russian military intelligence in Ukraine.

On this basis the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine handed Sapogov a note declaring him persona non grata. Two days later, he was expelled from Ukraine.
