Former Verkhovna Rada deputy Chechetov suspected of a crime

Former Party of Regions MP Mykhailo Chechetov was served a notice of suspicion in committing a crime for his role in passing of laws on January 16, 2014. A preventive measure on his detention is being decided.

Head of the department for special investigation at Ukraine's Prosecutor General Office Serhiy Horbatyuk said, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

Chechetov was served a notice of suspicion today.

"Concerning the passing of "draconian" laws of 16 January, 2014, a member of the former Parliament's counting committee Chechetov was declared to be a suspect today, and a preventive measure on his detention is being decided," Horbatyuk said.

He said that other three former legislators from former Party of Regions faction are also facing charges for their roles in passing the laws of January 16, 2014.

"Results of the investigation prove that there were not enough votes, and based on the fact of passing illegal legislative resolutions, former First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Kaletnyk, MP Oliinyk along with Oleksandr Yefremov are declared official suspects," said the official.

It should be reminded that the Ukraine's Parliament had passed a set of laws on January 16, 2014, which laws had significantly limited the rights and freedoms of Ukrainian citizens, by counting the lawmakers' raised hands . This event had escalated the confrontation on Kyiv's Maidan in winter of 2014.
