"The problem is that the militants fired not just at a military target, the airfield. They purposefully fired at the city. And they used Smerch MRLS, not Tornado," Selezniov said.
He noted that fragments sticking out of the ground in the city clearly show that the caliber is much bigger that Grad rockets.
"These are Smerch [rockets]. They have sufficient range to be launched from the territory of Horlivka [the Donetsk region, rebels-controlled - ed.] and they are very powerful. Therefore, we have such number of civilian casualties among Kramatorsk residents," the acting speaker stated.
An official of the Ministry of Defense, who wished to remain anonymous, told Ukrainska Pravda that according to preliminary information the shells weigh up to 800 kg.
"Currently there are six dead and 20 wounded confirmed among the civilians. [They were] aiming at military targets, but the impact zone of this type of shells is very large, which resulted in hitting residential areas. There are wounded among the military, but all the forces are currently engaged in helping the civilian population," he said.
He also said that before the shelling, the military shot down a drone.
"Obviously, it passed on the data, but they were not precise. As a result, the strike was conducted on the residential areas," the Ministry of Defense stated.
