Canada to impose additional sanctions against Russia due to recent attacks on Mariupol


Canada will impose additional sanctions against Russia in connection with the deliberate shelling of the residential neighborhood of Mariupol, which led to numerous victims.

Minister of International Trade of Canada Edward Fast told at the briefing in Kyiv on Monday, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

Edward Fast stated that Canada has decided to impose additional measures against Russia in connection with the tragedy in Mariupol, adding that it will be done in cooperation with Canada's allies: the U.S. and EU countries. He said that the Canadians are outraged by the events in Mariupol. They are also outraged that the Russian aggression against Ukraine continues. They will stand together with the Ukrainians and provide all necessary support for Ukraine to return to peaceful life and become a prosperous country.

Being asked about the possibility of providing lethal weapons to the ATO forces by Canada, Mr. Fast said that a non-lethal military support is currently provided and the Canadian government will continue to act in a similar vein according to the Ukrainian government's request.

Earlier, Canada imposed sanctions on seven Russian and three Crimean officials in March 2014, who "are politically responsible for the crisis" in Ukraine according to Ottawa.

1.2 million Canadian citizens are of Ukrainian heritage.
