This opinion was voiced by the Hungarian-born billionaire George Soros in remarks during a private dinner at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Censor.NET cites The Wall Street Journal reporting.
To stem the tide, Soros said, an increasingly democratic Ukraine needs financial assistance from the West to maintain its independence and persuade Russia to abandon its aggression.
Soros speaks of some opposition of "disintegrating Europe" against a "resurgent Russia," the WSJ reports. The West's ability to support Ukraine financially against Russia was a key test of the strength against Russia, Soros said.
According to Soros, Russia "has become a mafia state in which the rulers use the resources of the country to enrich themselves and to maintain themselves in power." He believes Russia is ruled by force as opposed to the rule of law, WSJ reports.
Whereas 25 years ago, the Soviet Union was breaking up and Europe was integrating, he warned, the situation has reversed today. The euro crisis, he said, has transformed the European Union from "what had been a voluntary association of sovereign states who were willing to surrender a part of their sovereignty for a common cause into something radically different: a relationship between creditors and debtors in which the debtors had difficulties in meeting their obligations and the creditors imposed conditions that made it difficult for the debtors to escape from their subordinate position," the billionaire said.
According to Soros, to stem the tide, an increasingly democratic Ukraine needs financial assistance from the West to maintain its independence and persuade Russia to abandon its aggression. "Not only the future of Ukraine but also the future of the European Union itself is at stake," Soros said.
"I believe the loss of Ukraine would be an enormous loss for Europe. It would allow Russia to divide and dominate," he believes.
It was reported earlier that Soros considers Russia's activities against Ukraine to threaten the EU's existence. He said that Russian aggression against Ukraine was implicitly aimed at the European Union.
