 Merkel voiced conditions of her participation in Astana meeting in ‘Normandy format’

German Chancellor Angela Merkel "remains open" for participation in the meeting in ‘Normandy format’ to resolve the situation in the Donbas, however she voiced as a condition the actual observance of the cease-fire and heavy weapons withdrawal from the east of the country.

According to German Chancellor's spokesperson Steffen Seibert, "Merkel, as before, is ready for such a meeting, which is going to be held in Kazakhstan, but "concrete progress" should be made first."

In particular Merkel insists on the importance to observe cease-fire, which is not currently implemented, because people are dying every day, as well as withdraw heavy weapons from the region.

German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli, in turn, said that "the preparations for such a meeting in Astana are still underway at certain levels."

Earlier, the government of Kazakhstan announced that the summit in 'Normandy format' to resolve the crisis in Ukraine could be held in late January.
