Russian army in Donetsk uses latest artillery position reconnaissance radar Aistenok. VIDEO + PHOTOS

While Ukrainian Armed Forces started receiving Lightweight Counter-Mortar Radar units (within the framework of United States military aid to Ukraine), terrorists of the so-called ‘DPR’ received the contemporary Russian analogue of such equipment – portable mortar position reconnaissance radar system Aistenok.

According to Censor.NET, a LiveJournal enttry by blogger bmpd described how an artillery radar system Aistenok was demonstrated on Jan. 15, 2015 to representatives of the OSCE in Donetsk with the purpose to prove that the Ukrainian side has been shelling Donetsk using a multiple rocket launcher BM-21 Grad.

Aistenok, which has 1-cm range capabilities, was developed and is produced by the Scientific and Production Association Strela, located in Tula, which is part of the Anti-Aircraft Defense Systems Concern "Almaz-Antey". According to manufacturer's specs, it is designed for reconnaissance of firing positions of 81-120 mm mortars, based on the mortar shell flight trajectory, reconnaissance of moving targets such as tanks, and monitoring of the 122-155 mm artillery fire based on shell explosions.

According to Oruzhie Rossii information agency, Aistenok is a Russian-made portable multi-functional system for monitoring enemy's firing positions and moving terrestrial targets, for monitoring own forces' mortar and artillery fire (based on mortar shell flight trajectory and artillery shell explosion). The system can be used for regular reconnaissance by mortar and artillery units of battalions, regiments and brigades, for counterbattery fire and elimination of enemy fire positions.

The portable radar system can detect and monitor mortar fire up to 5 (10) km, moving terrestrial targets such as tanks up to 20 km away within 60 degrees of azimuth. The portable version of the system weighs 135 kg. It was shown publicly for the first time by its manufacturer "Strela" at the International exposition of armaments and military equipment "МВСВ-2008", which was held at the Moscow Krasnaya Presnya Expo Center in August 2014.

The Aistenok system was created by the Scientific and Production Association "Strela", located in the city of Tula. It is part of the Anti-Aircraft Defense Systems Concern "Almaz-Antey" and is widely known in Russia and abroad as a developer of systems for radar reconnaissance of terrestrial targets and weapons' positions.
